NZ Scientist wanted to help in a PhD research on how the Internet has changed the Habitus of scientists.
Her PhD project is based on Pierre Bourdieu’s theories, especially the concepts of Habitus and Scientific Field and she plans to do her research via 15 narrative interviews (interviews from 3 language areas – 5 interviews each area – German: Austria, French (Roman): Quebec, English: New Zealand)

BB Lunch Meetings 2008

Three questions
1. Are members still interested in having monthly lunch meetings in 2008?
2. If so, what day would best suit?
3. And what format would you like - general discussion, small presentations, a mixture, or something else entirely?

Please post your responses and ideas in the comments. It is hoped that, if there is interest, we'll start having these meetings again in early March.

IRGO BB Lunch Meeting - November 7th 2007 (final meeting for 2007)

Below is a summary of the key themes of this discussion:
Glorious Self Promotion

1. Beyond the printed materials (see notes BB Lunch Sept 6th), there will also be a networked laptop with camera. Possible uses include
  • streaming existing content (i.e.: surgical recordings)
  • creating content for streaming (interviewing members and editing together snippets)
  • panel of experts who can engage in synchronous conversation with Digital Summit delegates
2. If technologically feasible, will attempt to use the Access Grid room (Otago) to connect with the laptop in Auckland to hail and chat with delegates (perhaps over lunch breaks)
  • need to establish connectivity
  • alternate channel -- Skype or iChat
3. Asynchronous text-based chat (backchannel) may also be useful.
4. Business card competition: Delegates will be asked to write a maximum of five tags on the back of their business card.
  • they will go into the draw to win 6 bottles of wine (first use of the most popular tag, or maybe the most original tag)
  • tags will be fed into an evolving cloud (screened on site - Andrew Long to organize software for cloud)
  • tags can be used to link delegates to researchers/teams who share interests
  • cloud will be printed out and sent to listed addresses as part of follow up contact
5. It was also decided that IRGO would apply for Network status in the current round of Humanities Networks and Clusters funding applications. Information as to the status of this application will be made available at the Network Status page.

IRGO BB Lunch Meeting - September 6th 2007

Below is a summary of the key themes of this discussion:
Publishing, Conferences, and the Digital Summit

1. Pursuing any formal publishing or conference/symposium would be difficult without first clarifying the aims, goals, or purpose of this group
2. Regarding the Digital Summit, was decided to create and send a Promotions Kit for the IRGO with the Otago delegation to Auckland to promote IRGO as a group pursuing research excellence and innovation, and one supporting innovation in teaching internet issues.
3. Possibility of informal research presentations at the monthly lunch-time seminars as a way to familiarize all members with the scope of research activities within the group
4. IRGO to be added to the Expertise Database. (Media Office contacted 06/09/07)

IRGO BB Lunch Meeting – August 8th 2007

Below is a summary of the key themes of this discussion:
What should IRGO do?

1. find out what other people are doing across the university – networking and collaboration
2. teaching profiles (what internet related courses are being taught across different divisions?)
3. fostering participation on online site, and making the presence of the site known to other interested individuals/groups
4. making our presence felt – advertising and promotion, advising boards, on- and off-campus groups, etc
o KAREN forum
o using web 2.0 in teaching (i.e.: assessing blogs; online course delivery)
5. outputs – publications and collaborations
6. manifesto
o discussion via the IRGO site (open inputs and ideas; keywords and statements; discussion and refinement of ideals/aims)
o F2F meeting to discuss and refine these statements
o Circulation of final statements to wider university community
7. Promotion of group (as both a network of scholars with a listed range of interests/research areas, and as an advisory group)
o How to get ‘lurkers’ to sign into and participate on the site

Three actionable items that came out of this discussion

1. The Manifesto of IRGO: What is it that we do?
2. Web 2.0 Teaching and Learning: Course content, assessment, and the internet
3. Promotion of IRGO: How to promote our existenceto attract new members and to participate in the wider University culture.

You are strongly encouraged to participate in these discussions, and to discuss IRGO with your colleagues.

Possible new journal: International Journal of Internet Social Networks (IJISN)

In a posting to the mailing list www-rdf-interest@w3.org, Mohamed Fayad (m.fayad@sjsu.edu) listed a number of journals he is involved with and asked for nominations for people to be on the editorial boards, advisory boards, or to serve as columnists. He also said"We also have been contacted to start two new journals and we are negotiating both deals right now. If you like to be considered for both or any of them, please let me know." One of these was theInternational Journal of Internet Social Networks (IJISN).

This is a question I am asked quite often. This group spans disciplinary boundaries, research affiliations, methodologies and any other bounding you'd care to create.

So I ask: what constitutes an internet researcher? How would you define what it is we do?
